Tasting Notes
Hoddles Creek planted in 1981 is our highest site in the Upper Yarra as it sits at an elevation of 270m. It is also our only site on volcanic red soils which are very deep and have a high water holding capacity. These soils contribute towards wines which are rounder and more open in structure while still display exquisite line and purity. Hoddles Creek has a gentle northerly aspect. The small site is divided into two planting densities giving extra complexity in management and at harvest. It sits in a slight arc and is protected by indigenous trees on three sides. Its' water holding capacity allows the site to be dry grown. Mac Forbes has leased this vineyard since 2011. - Mac Forbes
It's a funny time to be making wine in Australia. For many, technological advancements no longer define our wines, which bring us back to the age old question ‚– what makes our patch of dirt unique?
And this is our journey. We are committed to seeking out sites that we deem to be strong and unusual. Often these vineyards were unloved when discovered, however through listening to and learning from the sites themselves, we have been able to bring back the health of the vineyards and share their character through the wines we are now making.
We are surprised that we have found sites with such clarity and beauty. And as a result, this very small and slow project is teaching us a lot about our land and our place within it.
