Tasting Notes
Every now and then you come across a wine that isn't light and isn't heavy, it's not somewhere in between either. These fulfil the category of unicorn wines for me. They dance between full flavour and intensity while still maintaining a liveliness and even a surreal life of their own. These wines are some of the most satisfying and hence revered. Enter Mas Jullien.
This years blend is 70% Carignan Blanc and 30% Chenin Blanc. What a blend and what a wine. Highly sought after by the most cult collectors from around the world. Layer upon layer of character builds this southern French white into one of the most serious wines you'll ever come across. Drink now and over the next 20 years. - Chris L
Olivier Jullien comes from a family of grape growers in the Languedoc region. Languedoc was typically associated with lesser quality wines, overcropped vineyards and bulk production and this didn't sit right with Olivier who saw more for his family's holdings and the region. While still in his 20s he made the decision to establish a cellar utilising some extra space on the family farm and went on the hunt for vineyards to call his own. This decision paid off and now his wines sit amongst the top producers of the region, like Grange des Peres and Mas de Daumas Gassac who also shared his vision. These wines, especially Grange de Peres have become very sought after globally so we are very lucky to have Mas Jullien in stock.
The wines are imported in small quantities to Australia and have definitely flown under the radar here for a little while. Hopefully we can change that by sharing how excited we are to have these in-store! We've received an allocation of the white wine, a blend of 70% Carignan Blanc and 30% Chenin Blanc for a few years now and finally we have a selection of their Reds and a Rose to offer too! For the reds, he's working with Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvedre and are typically aged for around 18 months in older oak vessels including foudre. All the wines are built for the long haul so cellaring is recommended but if you can't wait then please let them have some time in a decanter before enjoying these extremely rare and special wines.
