Back to Burgundy

It is no secret how we all feel about Burgundy: from the simple Villages to the most iconic crus, we just can't get enough!

These past few weeks we have been lining our cellar walls with bottles and bottles of Burgundy: some from our favourite producers of the region; some from producers that are new to us, but our grapevine sources told us were worth seeking out.

There are far too many incredible stars of Burgundy to limit an email to introduce you, dear reader to merely one or two, and we could never choose a favourite.

Instead we have listed each producer's name; each links to their collection in our online store. Take the time to explore the collections, or come in to chat to us about what is on offer. There is certainly something for every taste and budget, from the traditional and classic styles of the historic and multigenerational domaines, to the new-wave produces who like to keep it fun and funky. - Peta W

Domaine Bobinet

'Producing wine without destroying nature or harming mankind, using the simplest and healthiest means.'

This is the mantra that Sébastien Bobinet and Emeline Calvez live by. They are the heart of Domaine Bobinet, situated in Saumur, between the banks of the Loire and the surrounding hills. From the outset, their approach has been one of natural winemaking, working hand in hand with the innate ecology of the vineyard, rather than trying to impose their will on it.

The Domaine was founded in 2002 when Sébastien took over 1.8 hectares of vineyard from his maternal grandparents. He is the seventh generation in a long line of family winemakers. Initially he grew 1.5 hectares of Cabernet Franc, with just 0.3 hectares of Chenin Blanc. But over time he has expanded the Domaine, adding an additional 2 hectares of Cab Franc in 2010, as well as planting Pineau d'Aunis, Gamay and Cot. After his partner Emeline joined the estate in 2011, Domaine Bobinet took a new turn, opening up to the international market, and expanding the winery and cellar door.

Everything that Sébastien and Emeline do in the vineyards and winery is by hand. They eschew the use of any kind of chemical treatments in the vines, and abstain from using harsh, automated machinery in the winery.

'We try to stay as close as possible to the grape itself and what it brings us naturally,' says Sébastien. 'Working in this way requires a greater investment of labour, time and energy, and also calls for a higher level of risk-taking compared to conventional wine-making.'

But the results are definitely worth it. The purity and elegance seen in the wines from Domaine Bobinet are simply exceptional. The Les Gruches was my gateway into Chenin Blanc, certainly my favourite variety. I think they should be your gateway too, not just for Chenin, but for incredible, natural wines from the Loire. Don't miss them. - Pete L

It's that time of year again!

WINE FAIR TIME!

ANNANDALE CELLAR DOOR

The festival of all things vinous is back and this time we are bringing the winemakers to our own backyard in Annandale!

We've handpicked a whole bunch of our favourite producers and asked them to transport the Cellar Door experience to our own Annandale Cellar Door @ Annandale Cellars for the day!

From NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, the producers will be on hand to chat about their wines as they pour them for you themselves. A great chance to quiz them on their craft (something they all love to discuss), or just talk about the weather (also something they all love to discuss). Rain, hail or shine, it won't stop the winemakers, and it is certain to a great day out!

Tickets are just $30 and include a Riedel tasting glass, yours to take home.
