Avani Amrit Skin Contact Pinot Gris 2024 (Orange)
Avani are an amazing little boutique winery operating out of the Mornington Peninsula and producing stunning wines in a minimal interventionist manner. Their wines are made using indigenous yeast ferments, no fining, no filtration and minimal sulphur. With lots of experience working with the legendary Phillip Jones of Bass Phillip in the 2000s, Shashi and Devendra refined their skills before starting their own label in 2012. These wines need to be drunk by more people!
This skin-contact Pinot Gris shows a striking blush orange hue and rewards being served a little warmer than usual. Time on skins brings aromatic lift, with floral tones of violet and rose layered alongside white pepper and subtle native herbal notes. The palate is fresh yet textured, with gentle grip from phenolics and softly shaped tannins adding depth without heaviness. Expressive, savoury and quietly complex, it’s a wine that unfolds beautifully in the glass. - Aaron C
Okros Wines Rkatsiteli Zvari 2022 (Orange)
Okro’s Wines sits in the mountainous village of Sighnaghi in Georgia’s eastern Kakheti region where they produce unique wines made in the regional traditional manner from indigenous varieties grown organically and made without any additions. The founder - John Okruashvili had close connections with the famous Pheasant's Tears wines of Georgia which formed the idea to start his own winery. This wine is an excellent introduction to the classic orange wines of Georgia.
A Georgian amber wine made from macerated Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, Saperavi, Budeshuri, Tsolikouri, and Tavkveri. Traditionally made with no additions whatsoever. It’s savoury and highly textured yet very approachable for this style of wine. Made to be drunk with food. – Chris L
Fiegl Dai Dai Bianco 2024 (Orange)
The Fiegl family has cultivated vineyards in Oslavia since 1782, when Valentino Fiegl signed the bill of purchase on a vineyard called “Meja”. Since then their aim has been to transmit the unique terroir of their region, primarily through the use of indigenous varieties and traditional blends. This particular wine is a great foray into Italian orange wines as it has all the hallmarks of the great Italian skin-contact wines such as the tannin and core flavour profile but presented in a much more accessible and fun way.
Fiegl's Dai Dai Bianco is a vibrant skin-contact white wine, a characteristic expression of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. It is a precise blend of two important local grape varieties: 60% Friulano and 40% Ribolla Gialla. The name "Dai Dai" is a playful moniker, potentially derived from the Italian exclamation "Dai!" (meaning "Come on!" or "Go for it!"), reflecting the youthful and modern spirit of this particular label. - Chris L
Momento Mori Staring At The Sun White 2023 (Orange)
Momento Mori is a small-scale winery run by a husband and wife team in Gippsland, Victoria. They farm their vineyards using strict organic principles, sourcing high-quality fruit from like-minded growers throughout Victoria who also strive for sustainable and natural farming practices. Their hand-made wines are made using small ferments, wild yeast, no oak and with no wine making additions. This results in wines that are idiosyncratic, full of character, freshness, purity, and above all, alive. These are probably the best selling orange wines in the store and customers will always ask when we're getting them back in the day that they sell out!
A unique blend of Italian varietals - Vermentino, Fiano and Moscato Giallo - from the Chalmers Vineyard in Heathcote (VIC). It is fermented on its skins to add depth of flavour and texture to the wine. What’s very prominent in this wine is its refreshing acidity, almost tartness, along with fine phenolics (tannins) which make it a great food wine. - Chris L
Klinec Jakot Tocai Friulano 2020
The Klinec winery is situated by in Friuli by the border with Slovenia where all of the great Italian orange wines come from. They farm their vineyards biodynamically and make their own compost and fertilisers made of: herbal, vegetable extracts and extracts from seaweed; they also use sour clays, silicates, whey, limited quantities of bluestone and sulphur. The vineyards are covered with grasses and trees and they work in accordance with the lunar cycles. This is a great wine for those that love the classics such as Radikon and Gravner.
From Aleks Klinec’s organically farmed vineyards in Medana, this skin-fermented Friulano (labelled asJakot, “Tokaj” spelled backwards) is a striking expression of Brda’s mineral-rich marl soils. The nose is complex and inviting, with notes of quince, dried apricot, citrus peel and wild herbs, layered over a subtle nutty and floral edge. On the palate it is textured and powerful, yet finely balanced, with savoury grip from extended skin contact offset by vibrant acidity and a long, saline finish. A wine of real depth and personality—equally compelling at the table as it is contemplative on its own. - Chris L
