Collection: Australia
Australia covers an enormous spread of climates and styles, from the warm heartlands to high cool sites and maritime corners, which is why it makes everything from rich and generous to taut and fine. The Barossa and McLaren Vale built the reputation on full bodied Shiraz and Grenache, while the Clare and Eden Valleys turn out some of the country's best Riesling, bone dry and ageworthy. Coonawarra and Margaret River are the homes of serious Cabernet, and the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Adelaide Hills and Tasmania run cooler, doing the lighter end of the spectrum with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling.
Shiraz is the signature, capable of everything from plush and peppery to savoury and restrained depending on where it grows, but the breadth is the real story. Old vine plantings, plenty of them dry grown, sit alongside a restless wave of growers working with Mediterranean varieties like Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Fiano and Vermentino, plus a thriving lower intervention scene. It is a country that does the classics with conviction and keeps pushing at the edges.
