Tasting Notes
This is the second year we have made this wine from the Kas Sluiter vineyard in Mylor. The Sluiter vineyard is ¾ of Ha of Syrah with 3 different clones 1164, 1127 and 1125. The soil is sand over light clay. The site is cool under the shadow of a large hill and ripening tends towards the end of April. When we were tasting the fruit for this harvest, we all agreed it was the tastiest fruit off the vine of all the vineyards and we are very excited to be working with these vines! The fruit for 2021 was harvested on the 3rd of April. The fruit was sorted chilled overnight and then destemmed. Fermentation took place on skins for 12 days before pressing. The wine was run to fibreglass tank and elevage was for 10 months on fine lees. The wine is soft and distinctly Syrah with powerful violets and blueberries. The fruit is grounded thought by the early tannins and acidy. The wine is light but has depth - very drinkable. - Winery Note
Commune of Buttons is the natural-wine project of Jasper Button with the support of his sister, Sophie, based on the family’s Fernglen farm in Basket Range, Adelaide Hills. Originally planted in the mid-1990s, Jasper returned in the early 2010s to revive the 3.5 hectares of mature Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo vineyards, embracing organic and biodynamic methods to restore soil health and farming vitality.
The name "Commune" reflects Jasper’s belief in collaborative winemaking—rooted in the shared spirit of the Basket Range community and the sense of belonging he discovered during harvests with growers from Beaujolais to local South Australian peers. His viticultural practices are hands-on and regenerative—mulch, biodynamic composts, teas and green pruning support low-yielding, expressive vines, while dry-grown farming ensures fresh, site-driven fruit always remains the focus.
In the cellar, Jasper blends European influence with Australian fruit: long, cool fermentations, minimal intervention, and aging with textural intent—red wines briefly in barriques then in steel for finesse, whites elevated on lees in demi-muids over two winters. Sulphur is used sparingly, only when needed, to preserve integrity and freshness.
Commune of Buttons’ wines are celebrated for their clarity, texture, and vibrant precision—natural expressions that capture not just the richness of the Adelaide Hills, but also Jasper’s dedication to thoughtful farming and authentic winemaking.
