Tasting Notes
Les Menais is a historic Saumur-Champigny vineyard lying on deep clay over tuffeau limestone — a terroir that naturally gives Cabernet Franc greater depth, generosity and power. Vines here are mature, producing small yields of intensely flavoured fruit that capture both the richness of the clay and the freshness of the limestone bedrock.
Fabien Duveau farms the site organically and biodynamically, harvesting by hand and vinifying with minimal intervention. Grapes are fully destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged in a balance of concrete and older oak to preserve purity while allowing gentle development.
The wine is supple and structured, with aromas of dark berries, violets and subtle herbs layered over a savoury mineral backbone. On the palate it shows generosity and concentration, yet remains finely poised, with polished tannins and a lingering, stony freshness. A deeper, more powerful expression of Saumur-Champigny, Les Menais is both approachable in youth and capable of rewarding cellar time. - Chris L
Less is more! Minimal intervention or Lo-fi wines encapsulate those producers who keep additions and manipulations to a minimum during the winemaking process. This means the wines are wild fermented, unfiltered and unfined, and only add sulfur during the process.
