Tasting Notes
From old vines rooted in Monforte d’Alba’s limestone-clay slopes, this Barbera shows lifted aromas of black cherry, plum and wild berries, layered with spice, dried herbs and a gentle earthy edge. The palate is concentrated yet balanced, with ripe dark fruit carried by Barbera’s natural acidity, giving both freshness and drive. Fine tannins and a savoury mineral thread underpin the long, structured finish. A serious, soulful expression of Barbera that combines depth and energy, reflecting both its Monforte terroir and Roddolo’s traditional, patient hand. - Chris L
Flavio Roddolo is one of the great traditionalists of Monforte d’Alba, quietly crafting soulful, uncompromising wines from his small estate in Piedmont’s Langhe. Working just a handful of hectares on limestone and clay slopes, Roddolo has earned a cult reputation for his meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar. The vines are farmed by hand with minimal intervention, and yields are kept deliberately low to preserve concentration and balance.
The range is rooted in the classic grapes of the region: Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, alongside a small planting of Cabernet Sauvignon. His Barbera and Dolcetto are deeply expressive and structured, while the Barolo is firmly traditional, marked by long macerations, extended élevage in large Slavonian botti, and a patient release schedule. These are wines that capture the raw authenticity of Monforte—deep, savoury, age-worthy, and resistant to fashion.
Flavio Roddolo’s work remains a benchmark for those who seek Barolo and Langhe wines with honesty, integrity and an unfiltered sense of place.
