Tasting Notes
From his tiny holdings in Monforte d’Alba, Flavio Roddolo produces a Barolo of remarkable depth and authenticity. The nose is dark and brooding, with aromas of black cherry, plum and dried rose layered with tar, tobacco, leather and spice. On the palate, it is powerful and structured, with concentrated fruit framed by firm tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that speaks clearly of Monforte’s limestone-clay soils. Long, savoury and mineral on the finish, this is a traditional, uncompromising Barolo built for ageing, reflecting both the terroir and Roddolo’s patient, old-school approach in the cellar. - Chris L
Flavio Roddolo is one of the great traditionalists of Monforte d’Alba, quietly crafting soulful, uncompromising wines from his small estate in Piedmont’s Langhe. Working just a handful of hectares on limestone and clay slopes, Roddolo has earned a cult reputation for his meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar. The vines are farmed by hand with minimal intervention, and yields are kept deliberately low to preserve concentration and balance.
The range is rooted in the classic grapes of the region: Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, alongside a small planting of Cabernet Sauvignon. His Barbera and Dolcetto are deeply expressive and structured, while the Barolo is firmly traditional, marked by long macerations, extended élevage in large Slavonian botti, and a patient release schedule. These are wines that capture the raw authenticity of Monforte—deep, savoury, age-worthy, and resistant to fashion.
Flavio Roddolo’s work remains a benchmark for those who seek Barolo and Langhe wines with honesty, integrity and an unfiltered sense of place.
