Tasting Notes
Frapin Château Fontpinot XO is a single-estate Cognac crafted entirely from Ugni Blanc grapes grown on the Frapin family's 240-hectare vineyard in the Grande Champagne region, the premier cru of Cognac. This expression is aged exclusively in the Château's cellars, allowing it to develop a rich and complex profile. On the nose, it offers a balanced bouquet of stewed prunes and honey. The palate is smooth yet complex, with flavours of dried fruits, nuts, and subtle spices, leading to a long, satisfying finish. - Aaron C
Frapin is one of Cognac’s most historic and esteemed houses, with roots dating back to 1270 and a family lineage of winegrowers and distillers spanning over twenty generations. Based in Segonzac, at the heart of the Grande Champagne cru—the most prized of Cognac’s vineyard areas—the estate encompasses over 240 hectares of vines, all in a single contiguous block. This exclusive focus on Grande Champagne terroir gives Frapin’s eaux-de-vie their renowned finesse, complexity and remarkable ageing potential.
Viticulture is conducted sustainably, with close attention to soil vitality and fruit quality, ensuring the Ugni Blanc grapes yield fresh, aromatic base wines. Distillation is carried out on the lees in traditional copper pot stills, lending body and depth to the spirit. Ageing takes place in Frapin’s extensive cellars, using a combination of dry and humid conditions to balance intensity with roundness.
The house style is elegant and expressive, favouring finesse, floral lift and length over sheer power. From vibrant VS and VSOP expressions to profound, long-aged Hors d’Âge and vintage bottlings, Frapin Cognac reflects both the family’s deep heritage and the singular character of Grande Champagne.
