Giant Steps is one of the leading names in the Yarra Valley, founded in 1998 by Phil Sexton with a vision to craft single-vineyard wines of precision and purity. From the outset, the focus has been on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sourced from exceptional sites across the Upper and Lower Yarra. Vineyards such as Sexton, Applejack, Wombat Creek and Primavera are now recognised as benchmarks in the region, each expressing unique soils, aspects and elevations.
Farming is sustainable, with a strong emphasis on minimal chemical use, canopy balance and hand harvesting. In the cellar, long-term winemaker Steve Flamsteed and the team have championed a restrained, low-intervention approach: wild ferments, whole bunch inclusion for Pinot Noir, gentle handling, and subtle oak that frames rather than masks the fruit.
The wines are celebrated for their clarity, balance and site expression—whether the regional Yarra Valley bottlings that capture the essence of the valley as a whole, or the single-vineyard releases that highlight the individuality of each plot. Today, Giant Steps stands as a modern icon of the Yarra Valley, producing wines that combine elegance, vibrancy and a strong sense of place.
