Tasting Notes
Luckily, I have access to very small parcels of fruit from old, dry-grown, hand-pruned and picked vineyards of up to 160 years of age. I decided early that making a Grenache the way Barossan families made table wines many generations ago would honour the years of back-breaking work required for keeping the vineyards feasible and sustainable. Whole-bunch ferments, no crushing or temperature control, natural yeasts, hand plunged and foot trodden. Racked once during elevage of 12 months in larger barrels and always a small addition of old vine mataro for balance. Bottled unfined under Stelvin capsule. - Alex Head
HEAD Wines was started in 2006 by Alex Head. It focuses on single site Rhone varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. Each HEAD Wine shows a distinctive house style of powerful fruit weight, elegance, freshness, finesse and balance which starts by farming vineyards sustainably and in some cases using organics and biodynamics. Yields are low/controlled, grapes are hand-picked, ferments use indigenous yeasts with some retention of stems and maturation in larger format barrels. Minimal sulphur is used during the whole wine-making process and bottling is without fining or filtration. Each Head Wine not only represents Alex Head's strong views on what makes balanced, drinkable wines for the table, but a guarantee of absolute quality, value and consistency. - Winery Note
