Tasting Notes
Fruit from a single vineyard in the Coal River Valley (Brinktop) was picked on the 3rd of May. The ‘1654’ clone of Syrah was fermented separately. Predominantly whole berry, 8% whole bunch, natural yeast, held on skins for 21 days while getting gently pumped over once a day while the ferment was most active (4-5 times in total). Pressed directly to and matured in oak (30% new) for 9 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. - Winemaker Note
Hughes & Hughes is a dynamic Tasmanian project from brothers Matthew and Jonathan Hughes, established in 2014 as a creative offshoot of their established Mewstone Wines venture in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, just south of Hobart. Whereas Mewstone focuses on single-vineyard precision, Hughes & Hughes allows greater freedom—sourcing fruit from across Tasmania and exploring more experimental, small-batch winemaking.
The range spans aromatic whites, Pinot Noir, and innovative blends, often produced with techniques such as skin contact, amphora aging, or pétillant-naturel bottling. All are made with a light hand—wild fermentations, minimal additions, and a focus on freshness, texture, and early approachability.
Hughes & Hughes has quickly gained a reputation for expressive, energetic wines that showcase both Tasmania’s cool-climate character and the brothers’ curiosity and creativity. These are wines that balance precision with playfulness, offering vivid fruit, clarity, and a contemporary edge.
