Tasting Notes
From cool Martinborough sites harvested with meticulous precision, this Riesling opens with aromas of lime zest, green apple and white peach, accented by jasmine and a hint of wet stone. The palate is taut and finely etched, balancing citrus and orchard fruit with racy acidity and a crystalline mineral line. A touch of residual sugar brings subtle texture and balance, without ever diminishing the wine’s energy and focus. Long, pure and refreshing, it is a Riesling of clarity and finesse with the potential to develop beautifully in bottle. - Chris L
Kusuda Wines is one of New Zealand’s most distinctive small domaines, founded in Martinborough in 2001 by Tokyo-born winemaker Hiroyuki Kusuda. A former lawyer and diplomat, Kusuda studied viticulture and oenology in Germany before settling in Martinborough, drawn by its cool climate, varied soils and the potential to produce wines of finesse and precision. From the beginning, his philosophy has been one of obsessive detail—grape bunches are often hand-sorted berry by berry, and vineyard work is painstakingly precise.
The estate focuses on Pinot Noir, Syrah and Riesling, with small volumes of late-harvest and TBA-style wines made in exceptional years. Farming is careful and sustainable, and winemaking is low-intervention, guided by spontaneous ferments, minimal additives and gentle handling to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression. The resulting wines are crystalline, aromatic and finely structured, marked by both delicacy and intensity.
Today, Kusuda is celebrated as one of New Zealand’s most singular producers, crafting wines that marry European sensibility with Martinborough’s distinctive voice, and which have become highly sought after around the world.
