Tasting Notes
This Syrah from Martinborough is striking in its purity and refinement, offering aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry lifted by violet, black pepper and a subtle graphite edge. The palate is vibrant and medium-bodied, with concentrated dark fruit wrapped in fine, chalky tannins and driven by fresh acidity. Layers of spice and savoury mineral notes add depth, while the finish is long, precise and elegant. A Syrah of both power and finesse, it reflects Kusuda’s hallmark precision and has the structure to age gracefully. - Chris L
Kusuda Wines is one of New Zealand’s most distinctive small domaines, founded in Martinborough in 2001 by Tokyo-born winemaker Hiroyuki Kusuda. A former lawyer and diplomat, Kusuda studied viticulture and oenology in Germany before settling in Martinborough, drawn by its cool climate, varied soils and the potential to produce wines of finesse and precision. From the beginning, his philosophy has been one of obsessive detail—grape bunches are often hand-sorted berry by berry, and vineyard work is painstakingly precise.
The estate focuses on Pinot Noir, Syrah and Riesling, with small volumes of late-harvest and TBA-style wines made in exceptional years. Farming is careful and sustainable, and winemaking is low-intervention, guided by spontaneous ferments, minimal additives and gentle handling to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression. The resulting wines are crystalline, aromatic and finely structured, marked by both delicacy and intensity.
Today, Kusuda is celebrated as one of New Zealand’s most singular producers, crafting wines that marry European sensibility with Martinborough’s distinctive voice, and which have become highly sought after around the world.
