Tasting Notes

Tasmanian Pinot Noir is on the rise, in price. Yet only a few wines live up to the quality that comes with the price tag. This is definitely one of them. It's sensational. Medium weight with great depth and finesse. There is only a small portion of new oak used so it is a very pure expression of the Meadowbank site as crafted by Peter Dredge (ex Bay or Fires). Mixed flavours of red and darker fruits as well as beautiful savoury notes that add to the wine's complexity. Long and supple tannins. - Chris L

High in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley, Meadowbank began when Gerald Ellis defied the odds and planted vines on his sheep farm in 1976—at a time when many believed Tasmanian vines wouldn’t flourish. Today, the property, stewarded by Gerald, his wife Sue, and their daughter Mardi, has grown into one of Tasmania’s most iconic vineyard estates. Their vineyard now spans over 50 hectares, anchored on distinctive soils of loose sand and sandstone over coffee rock—rich in iron and organic matter—that deliver fruit of near-ethereal quality.

In 2015, celebrated winemaker Peter Dredge joined the family in both ownership and winemaking, bringing finesse and a site-driven vision that revitalized Meadowbank’s wine program. Now, the label produces a compelling range made in very small batches—Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gamay, Syrah, and sparkling—all crafted to channel the purity, tension, and freshness of the Derwent Valley terroir.

Meadowbank embodies pioneering spirit, grounded in stewardship, family and fun, and today is a reference for expressive, cool-climate Tasmanian wine that balances refinement with a genuine sense of place.
