Tasting Notes
A very serious and quite striking Burgundy from Mongeard Mugneret. It comes from a slightly higher altitude vineyard than a lot of other sites in Burgundy giving the wine more freshness in the form of acidity. This tart acidity (at this point of it's life) sits alongside a ripe fruit profile that is prolific with the 2015 vintage wines. This particular wine needs about 3 years in the cellar to settle down and come together, but doesn't need more than 5. - Chris L
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is a prominent and historic Burgundy estate based in Vosne-Romanée, with family roots in the region stretching back to 1620. Unusually for Burgundy, the domaine owns an expansive 30 hectares of vineyards spread across an impressive 35 different appellations in the Côte de Nuits and beyond, from regional AOCs to some of Burgundy's most coveted Grand Crus. These diverse holdings feature primarily Pinot Noir vines with an average age exceeding 40 years, planted on ideal mid-slope, clay-limestone soils, providing the foundation for concentrated and complex wines.
The winery's approach, guided by Vincent and Alexandre Mongeard, emphasizes sustainable viticulture and rigorous selection in the vineyard. Grapes are typically destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts after a cold maceration, and aged for up to two years in oak barrels that are carefully managed in-house. The amount of new French oak used increases with the wine's classification, ranging from 25% for village wines to nearly 100% for top Grand Crus, a key element in defining their signature style.
The resulting wines are characterized by a powerful, rich, and concentrated profile that is built to age. While approachable in their youth, they are known for their structure and depth, developing complex secondary aromas of earth, mushroom, and spice over time. The domaine’s most iconic and sought-after bottles include significant holdings in the Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux Grand Crus, which are highly prized by collectors worldwide.
