Tasting Notes
A much fresher and modern take on Primitivo that sees no oak and is aged in stainless steel and then for an extra year in bottle. It’s softer but still riper fruited packed with blackberry, ripe plum, lavender and sweet spice. - Pete L
Pietraventosa is a small, organic estate founded in 2005 by Marianna and Raffaele Annio near Gioia del Colle in Puglia. Driven by a desire to elevate the region’s noble Primitivo grape, they farm just under six hectares on red-iron-clay and limestone soils, carved into steep, wind-swept slopes—the name “Pietraventosa,” meaning “windy rock,” reflects this rugged site.
Marianna oversees vineyard and cellar work with a light hand and deep respect for the land, while Raffaele—an engineer by training—brings creative innovation, including custom-designed fermentation vessels. Their approach is sustainable and experimental, combining native fermentations, minimal intervention, and a balance of stainless steel and neutral large-format oak so the purity of fruit and soil shines through.
Across their lineup—from the vivid, unfiltered Primitivo “Allegoria” to the richer Riserva and imaginative blends—Pietraventosa crafts wines of individuality, elegance, and strong regional identity, making a compelling Puglian statement rooted in both tradition and innovation.
