Tasting Notes
Wondering why Central Otago pinot often has a boldness but the alcohol or new oak components are not high? This Prophets Rock may explain how the Schist rocky soils common through many areas in Otago, create this.
The schist soils are generally less aromatic, as you find here, with the floral red fruits initially hidden behind earthier, darker reductive character for some time, even after decanting. The taste too is influenced by the rocky schist, giving you a more dense mineral-infused brooding darker red fruits. Finished nicely with brisk, chalky ripe tannins too. A good example of the meatier, more minerally or dark spice style of pinot - a nice change-up from prettier fruit we increasingly find in pinot noir. 13% alc. - Michael L
