Tasting Notes
Drawn from a perpetual reserve of Chardonnay sourced exclusively from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, this cuvée shows the depth and complexity that come from long-term solera blending combined with Mesnil’s unmistakable chalk purity. The nose layers lemon oil, white flowers and green apple with toasted almond, chalk dust and subtle pastry notes from extended ageing. On the palate, it is both textural and razor-focused—creamy in its mid-palate weight yet driven by a vibrant saline line that speaks clearly of deep Côte des Blancs chalk. Fine, persistent bubbles carry citrus, hazelnut and mineral tones through a long, cool, structured finish. A beautifully harmonised and quietly powerful Blanc de Blancs that marries richness with crystalline Mesnil precision. - Chris L
Robert Moncuit is a grower–producer based in the grand cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, crafting pure, mineral-driven Blanc de Blancs from some of the most prized Chardonnay terroir in the Côte des Blancs. The estate was founded in 1889, but its modern identity was shaped by Pierre Moncuit, who established a commitment to parcel expression and meticulous vineyard work that now continues under his grandson, Pierre-Amour Moncuit. With around 8 hectares of old-vine Chardonnay—much of it planted in the 1950s and ’60s—the domaine works exclusively with estate fruit, ensuring clarity of origin in every cuvée.
Viticulture follows a sustainable, minimal-intervention philosophy, with thoughtful canopy management, careful pruning and a strong emphasis on soil health. Mesnil’s deep, pure chalk is the heart of Moncuit’s style: it gives the wines their linearity, salinity and remarkable longevity. Harvesting is done by hand, with an uncompromising focus on ripeness and balance.
In the cellar, fermentations occur in stainless steel to preserve tension and precision, with extended lees ageing adding texture and detail. Malolactic fermentation is allowed selectively, depending on vintage character. Key cuvées include the Les Grands Blancs NV, the Réserve Perpétuelle, and a collection of highly regarded vintage Blanc de Blancs, each highlighting different parcels within Mesnil. Dosage is kept low across the range to maintain purity and chalk-driven definition.
Robert Moncuit remains one of Mesnil’s quiet stars: a domaine producing wines of finesse, precision and crystalline minerality—Champagnes that speak clearly of place and reward both immediate drinking and patient cellaring.
