Tasting Notes
For those who like the road less travelled. Although made with a minimalist philosophy, the wine has no shortage of expression. Evident skin contact and extended time in barrel reflects in the many layers and the volume this wine displays. For those who appreciate voluptuousness with a savoury spicy edge.
Winery Note:
In 2011, I was inspired by the wines of Frank Cornelissen and Gravner to produce a wine that defied conventional winemaking. From a Chardonnay vineyard that was planted in 1984 I took a small parcel and fermented the grapes in a barrel that had the head knocked out. For 4 ~ weeks I hand plunged the whole berries, before pressing off into an old French oak barrel. The wine then spent 18 months in barrel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. It took a further year and a half in bottle to fully pull itself together. - Winery Note:
View Road Wines is a partnership between father and son team Brian and Josh Tuckfield. View Road Wines realises Josh's vision of using traditional winemaking techniques that showcase the true colours of the variety, vineyard and season. The idea to create hand-crafted wines of a unique, rather than standardised, nature was conceived while he was working on a Barossa vintage with Tom Shobbrook.
Employing 'old world' winemaking practices ‚– which include handpicking, whole bunch press and wild yeast fermentation ‚– focuses our attention on the selection of varieties that are best suited to their region and that are considered to be the best quality fruit in Australia. To allow the natural characteristics of the wine to fully express itself there are no additions at any stage, excepting a small amount of sulphur prior to bottling.
Generally, we hand pick at lower baumes than our neighbours.
Our red wines are gently de-stemmed into small 1/2 tonne open top fermenters or ferment in the barrel and the whole berries undergo wild fermentation before being pressed off after an extended period on skins. Our white wines, except the Amelie, are whole bunch pressed to older French oak and/or stainless steel. All of our wines are matured in older French oak as the flavour and structure of the French oak doesn't swamp the beautiful fruit purity of the grape variety. - Winery Note
