Tasting Notes
Deep garnet with a blue edge, the 2021 Sangiovese opens slowly but reveals dark cherries, raspberries and a touch of spice. The palate is plush yet elegant, showing layers of ripe red and dark fruit, balanced acidity, and softer, more refined tannins than previous vintages. With good weight and length, it finishes fresh and bright, promising a long life ahead. - Pete L
Vinea Marson's story is rooted in a winemaking legacy that spans four generations, a journey that brought the family from the Friuli region of northeastern Italy to the rugged, sun-drenched landscapes of Heathcote, Victoria. Established in 2000 by Mario and Helen Marson, the winery is now run by Mario and his daughter, Madeleine, who share a profound respect for the land and a passion for bringing the elegance of Italian varietals to the Australian table.
Their philosophy is centered on low-intervention winemaking, where they let the unique terroir and the quality of their fruit speak for themselves. They've embraced sustainable viticultural practices, prioritizing soil health and biodiversity to enhance the resilience of their vines in a changing climate. In their state-of-the-art winery, they marry tradition with innovation, employing wild fermentation for all wines and utilizing a balance of classic techniques with modern approaches such as skin contact and carbonic maceration to achieve brightness and textural complexity.
In addition to the Vinea Marson range, which features elegant expressions of Heathcote Shiraz, Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo, as well as unique Italian white blends like the 'Grazia', the Marsons also produce the second label: Elm. The Elm wines are the personal project of Madeleine Marson and are a playful, modern take on Italian family favorites, paying tribute to the upbringing she and her two sisters (Emily and Laura, or E.L.M.) had in the Yarra Valley and Heathcote. Sourced from both Heathcote and the Alpine Valleys, the Elm label allows for experimental approaches and a fresh perspective on traditional Italian styles. The resulting wines across both labels are textural, persistent, and full of character, designed to be enjoyed with plentiful antipasti.
