PIERRE-YVES COLIN-MOREY

The Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey estate was born in 2001 from the association of Pierre-Yves Colin (son of Marc) and Caroline Morey (daughter of Jean-Marc). Pierre-Yves left his family estate Domaine Marc Colin where he had built a reputation for producing exceptional white wines, acquiring about 2 hectares of the family vineyards and slowly purchasing other plots that make up the total 13 hectares across the villages: Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay, Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault that they operate today.

This Domaine works with some of the best terroirs in Burgundy which is why they are extremely concerned about the health and sustainability of the vineyards. The soils are worked or grassed in the steepest plots. With each vintage, the grapes are picked with a perfect balance between freshness and optimal maturity. The white wines are lightly whole bunch pressed, fermented with natural yeasts, aged on lees for up to 18 months in mostly in 350 litre barrels with no lees stirring and no filtration. PYCM also source all of their corks from one tiny supplier which are longer and wider than regular corks and untreated with paraffin. Bottles are then sealed with wax to prevent premature oxidation.

We've just had a new lot of these incredible wines hit our store that we have to share with you. The '23 'Aligote' comes from 25% located in Chassagne Montrachet lower slopes and 75% from a parcel in Hautes Côtes de Beaune and ages in 350L barrels for 14 months, 3 months in tank and is the only wine to go through full malo. Absolute amazing. The '23 'Bourgogne Blanc' and '23 'Hautes-Cotes de Beaune Blanc' (also available in magnum) are an excellent introduction to the general style of PYCM without the larger price tags. The '23 'Saint-Aubin Blanc' also represents relative value in white Burgundy and shows what they can achieve with village level grapes. Always delicious. There is also the '24 'Rose de Pinot Noir' which is one of the best Pinot-based Roses on the market. There are also some of their fantastic reds available: the '23 'Auxey-Duresse Bas du Duresse', '23 'Monthelie La Riotte 1er', '23 'Santenay La Comme', '23 'Vosne-Romanee', '23 'Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint Jean 1er', '23 'Chassagne Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er' and the '23 'Nuit Saint Georges Aux Boudots 1er'. The PYCM reds are often overlooked because their whites receive so much attention so don't pass these up. These cult wines from PYCM never last long so don't hesitate!

Felton Road

Felton Road have established themselves as one of the greatest Pinot producers from New Zealand's Central Otago and have received international acclaim for their work. Considerable research by Stewart Elms (hence the Elm tree logo) in 1991 identified the north facing slopes at the end of Felton Road, Bannockburn as being one of the warmest and most ideal sites in Central Otago for the growing and production of premium wine. The research has proven to be correct as Felton Road continue to craft thoughtful wines that speak to their place more than 3 decades later.

Since 2002 the vineyards have been managed organically and biodynamically. In 2010 all four vineyards were awarded full Demeter certification and in 2020 they were all also certified by BioGro. Meticulous summer management of a single vertical shoot positioned (VSP) canopy ensures even and early fruit maturity. Shoot thinning, shoot positioning, leaf plucking and bunch thinning are all carried out by hand as required, to ensure optimum quality fruit. They have inter-row planting of various different cover crops in order to assist in controlling vine vigour, improve soil health and general biodiversity. Mulch is also used in drier parts of the vineyard to help retain moisture, minimise the requirement for irrigation and to balance areas of lighter, more free draining soils. Organic compost is made utilising the winery waste, and organic cow manure and straw.

We've stocked up on some of these classic Pinots for winter. The '24 'Bannockburn' is a blend of their 4 vineyards and serves as an excellent introduction to the Felton Road Pinots. Floral and savoury. The '24 'Cornish Point' comes from a vineyard planted in 2000 on moderately deep fine sandy loams and is completely surround by the lake which helps to moderate temperatures and eschew frost and producers a dark and floral Pinot. Finally, the '24 'MacMuir' is a north-facing site on deep silt loams and is relatively new addition to the single vineyard Pinots. Felton Road won the NZ Best Winery of the Year award by The Real Review 2 years in a row now - in 2024 and now in 2025. Try some of these Pinots and see what the hype is about!

Stargazer

Stargazer are one of the most exciting producers emerging from Tasmania, crafting distinctive Chardonnay and Pinot as well as other great treasures. Stargazer pays tribute to Abel Tasman - a navigator and explorer cited as the first European to set sight on the island (as well as the south island of NZ shortly after), and would have spent a lot of time gazing up at the stars. Winemaker Samantha Connew is a South Island Kiwi who fell in love with Tasmania, so Abel is a natural link for her. Sam is always inspired by the adage “always look up at the stars and not down at your feet” which is evident in these beautiful wines that inspire and tantalise.

The first case of wine that Sam ever bought was a dozen of Riesling from Tassie’s Tamar Valley and the first vintage she ever worked was in Oregon, understandably falling in love with Pinot. It made sense that after numerous forays around the world that she would end up in Tasmania making Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. On top of working vintages in Oregon, Italy, Spain and working as the Senior Winemaker for 10 years at McLaren Vale’s Wirra Wirra and 5 at Hunter Valley’s Tower Estate, Sam has also worked for the Australian Wine Research Institute, was the youngest person and first woman to serve as Chair of Judges at the Sydney Royal Wine Show and even sits on the board of the Len Evans Tutorial.

We've just picked up a range of classic Stargazer wines covering their classic grapes: Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The '25 'Riesling' comes primarily from some younger vines in their Palisander Vineyard in Coal River Valley and shows a crisp and immediately rewarding expression of Tassie Riesling. The '24 'Palisander Riesling' is more concentrated and complex single vineyard wine which is drinking well now but will definitely age gracefully in the bottle. The '24 'Chardonnay' is one of the most exciting from Tasmania and ages in 500L oak barrel (20% new) for 8 months on its lees. This has energetic acid and is initially fairly taught but will reward air or time in bottle. Finally, the '24 'Palisander Pinot Noir' is an excellent single vineyard Pinot comprised of 20% whole bunches and ages for 8 months in French oak puncheons of which 25% are new. These are some of the best wines coming out of Tasmania, pick of some of these to see what all the fuss is about!
